Locust Valley

Just one square mile in size, Locust Valley encompasses historic landmarks and celebrity homes, as well as shops, boutiques and a Long Island Railroad Station. The hamlet was once part of a much larger region now known as northern Nassau County where Captain John Underhill and farmers settled in 1667 and negotiated with the Native American Matinecock Tribe to purchase land for a settlement later named Buckram. This name would last for nearly 200 years, until 1856 when it was changed to Locust Valley to reflect the large number of locust trees. Locust Valley is home to two exclusive private golf clubs: The Creek Club founded in 1923 and the Piping Rock Club in Matinecock.

Fun fact: In May 2012, The Washington Post and U.S News & World Report ranked Locust Valley High School as being one of the best high schools in the country.
