Farmingdale

Farmingdale is an incorporated village on Long Island within the Town of Oyster Bay and sits near the eastern end of what was the Hempstead Plains. Englishman Thomas Powell purchased 15 square miles of land from the Marsapequa Indians for 140 pounds in 1695. When real estate speculator Ambrose George opened a general store in 1841 and bought several acres of land, industry, including a brickworks and lumberyard, was attracted to Farmingdale.

Fun fact: Charles Murphy’s famous Mile-A-Mile bicycle ride took place in Farmingdale, where Murphy tried to keep up with a Long Island Railroad train on a bicycle.
